Holland America Line and the Port of Seattle are teaming up on a new program called Ship to Shelter, a community giving program billed as the first of its kind in the nation. This pilot program is designed to donate valuable and reusable goods from Holland America cruise ships sailing from Seattle this summer to locals in need. Partnering with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Cruise Terminals of America and Northwest Harvest, the Port of Seattle will work with the Seattle-based cruise line to donate items from the ships weekly to be distributed to shelters and homeless programs throughout Washington.
The program kicks off April 29 with Oosterdam, which will be docked at Pier 30, providing hundreds of toiletry items to Northwest Harvest, where they will be stored and then distributed to needy individuals and families. In addition to the weekly donations of individual-sized toiletries, Holland America will periodically provide items such as towels, linens, dishes, cookware, silverware, televisions and mattresses. “There is an incredible need for basic toiletry items in the homeless community, especially in our women’s shelters,” said Shelley Rotondo, executive director of Northwest Harvest. A press conference on the program will be held April 29 at Pier 30 at the Port of Seattle. Speakers include Stein Kruse, president and CEO of Holland America Line; Tay Yoshitani, CEO of the Port of Seattle; Shelly Rotondo; and Roland Suliveras, area port director of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
