Top Ten Tips
Making every penny of the vacation dollar count: that is the goal of any traveler. Taking a cruise vacation makes that goal easily achievable. The consumer who does some research and takes advantage of expert advice will discover, to his or her delight, that there are many ways to save and stretch the dollar by choosing a cruise.

“One of the top reasons cruises are so popular is the outstanding value they represent. And, because of the incredible variety of cruises, cruise ships, itineraries and destinations available, consumers can find even greater value and stretch their vacation dollar further by choosing the right cruise for their budget,” said Terry L. Dale, president and CEO of CLIA.

Here are some tips for planning a value-added cruise vacation:
CLIA member cruise lines offer inclusive pricing. Accommodations, meals, entertainment, use of most ship’s facilities, and transportation from destination to destination are all included in the cruise price; this means the consumer is already off to a great start in realizing value for money spent.

Cruises are offered in every possible price category. Spend a little or spend a lot; it’s easy to pick the line that matches your budget. Cruises come in every length, from three days to three months. If budget is a high priority, pick a shorter cruise.

CLIA member cruise lines operate all over the world. By picking an “off season” destination – the Caribbean this summer, for example – travelers can often save money without losing any of the fun, excitement and pleasure of vacationing in the tropics.

With a weak U.S. dollar, planning a European cruise and paying in advance, in dollars, often represents added value compared to a European vacation paid in local currencies.

On most ships, the price of your cruise is based on your choice of accommodations, nothing else. Most ships offer a wide choice of inside and oceanview staterooms, staterooms with balconies, even suites. If budget is a consideration, choose an inexpensive inside stateroom and enjoy the same dining, entertainment and use of ship’s facilities as everyone else.

Most CLIA member ships offer a wide variety of accommodations. If spacious, luxurious accommodations are your top priority, choose a cruise line whose suites match your budget.

Cruises are an ideal choice for families, extended families and friends who want to share a memorable vacation. Put together your own group of cruisers and ask for a group rate.

There are more than 30 homeports for cruise ships in the United States. Wherever you live, pick a cruise you can drive to in order to save on the cost of airfare.

Most important, take advantage of the expertise, experience and knowledge of a CLIA-certified travel agent. No type of vacation offers more variety than cruising; you’ll enjoy extra satisfaction – and that, after all, is what value really means – by matching your cruise with your tastes, interests and budget. And, that is what CLIA’s 16,000 travel agents around the country do best.

Costa Maya Mexico Reopens with New Zip-Line Adventure for Cruise Passenger Enjoyment – Cruise Port News

Cruise Zanza Blue

Cruise Zanza Blue

Puerto Costa Maya has reopened to cruise ship visits after being closed since August 2007 due to damage caused by Hurricane Dean. The port reopened with the launch of BioMaya Bacalar, a Mayan-flavored zip-lining adventure that takes guests through the jungle of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Offered as a three-part excursion, BioMaya Bacalar greets guests with a symbolic soul-cleansing ritual performed by local Mayans, sending guests off on their zip-lining journey. After soaring through the jungle alongside red-winged Macaws, the last platform leaves guests at the edge of the Bacalar Lagoon, known by locals as the birthplace of the rainbow.

Guests cool off as they float across the water to the other side of the lagoon, where native fruit juices and other Mexican delicacies await guests before they trek through the jungle.

BioMaya Bacalar’s four platforms are built on iron towers ranging from 656 feet to 2,559 feet. The zip-line tour is the only one in the world that allows for tandem side-by-side gliding. “Cruise ship passengers will return to new offerings that capture the uniqueness of Costa Maya and the surrounding region,” said Teofilo Hamui, president and CEO of the Port of Costa Maya.

Located just hours from Cancun on Mexico’s southern Yucatan Peninsula, Costa Maya was the Western Caribbean’s first port designed exclusively for the cruise industry. Resembling an ancient Mayan city, Costa Maya can accommodate three ships at once, including F3 and Genesis class ships.

Costa Maya has three grand pavilions, artisan and luxury shopping areas, a beach club, saltwater pools, fine restaurants and bars. Costa Maya was named Seatrade Insider’s 2007 Port of the Year.

Disney Cruise Lines – Disney Wonder to Host Disney Channel World Premiere

Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Wonder will host a red-carpet, world-premiere event Aug. 28-31 for the new Disney Channel original series “The Suite Life on Deck,” a spin-off of “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody.”

During this premiere at sea, guests will experience a Hollywood-style, red-carpet arrival of Disney Channel stars, a sneak-peek of the first episode of “The Suite Life on Deck” and an opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer session with stars of the show.

Cast members scheduled to appear include Cole Sprouse (Cody Martin), Dylan Sprouse (Zack Martin), Brenda Song (London Tipton), Phill Lewis (Mr. Moseby) and Debby Ryan (Bailey Pickett). All events will take place on decks 9 and 10 on Aug. 29 at the family-friendly Goofy Pool. A day after the premiere, another Disney Channel star will take the stage.

Mitchel Musso, star of “Hannah Montana” and “Phineas and Ferb” will perform a mini-concert at the Goofy Pool. At the concert’s end, Musso will spend a few minutes answering questions from the audience.

This marks the first time Disney Cruise Line and Disney Channel have partnered to develop a multi-day event. The voyage is nearly sold-out. “The Suite Life on Deck” premieres on Disney Channel at 8 p.m. ET/PT Sept. 26.

In this new live-action comedy series, teenage twins Zack and Cody Martin, and spoiled hotel heiress London Tipton, go aboard a luxury passenger cruise liner, the SS Tipton, owned by London’s father, as it cruises the world with tourists and students who attend classes at its Seven Seas High.

Mr. Moseby is reassigned from the Tipton Hotel to be the cruise ship’s hotel manager, but is quickly deflated when he finds out that Zack, Cody and London are onboard too. Joining in the hijinks is London’s new roommate Bailey, a sweet, Southern girl who has just left her small-town roots to experience a new world.

More Luxury Cruise Line Information is available at www.zanza.com/CLmain.aspx

Crystal Cruises and Yamaha are adding a series of progressively challenging classes called “Passport to Music PLUS.” Geared toward more accomplished piano and keyboard players, the new curriculum builds from the basics to more advanced levels. Available complimentary through the line’s Creative Learning Institute, the courses are scheduled this year on more than a dozen Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity cruises in the Mediterranean, Baltic, transatlantic, Panama Canal and South America. The three new “PLUS” classes are “Playing By Ear,” focusing on sharpening listening skills to enhance playing or singing and discover music without the printed page; “Exploring Chords 101” on the basics of harmony, music theory and orchestration and how to create and play chords; “Exploring Chords 202,” which progresses to higher levels of harmony study.

“The Yamaha ‘Passport to Music’ program has exceeded the expectations of Crystal guests, who are so thrilled with the curriculum that they’ve been eagerly awaiting more advanced courses,” said Kristin Turner, Crystal’s manager of entertainment. “The ‘PLUS’ program is ideal for musicians who are returning to the piano as well as those interested in furthering their musical skills.”

Study materials for each class will include homework exercises that participants can complete during lab sessions held during days at sea. The lab sessions will provide guests with additional practice and one-on-one time with instructors. By the end of 2008, an independent study option will debut, enabling participants to work on their own selected pieces of music with the aid of step-by-step guidelines and instructor assistance. Crystal has offered “Passport to Music” keyboard classes through Yamaha aboard every cruise on Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony since 2003 and 2004, respectively. “Passport to Music PLUS” classes began on Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity in May and June, respectively.

How To Book a Cruise Vacation – Review Cruise Lines – Cruise Line Reviews

Published by Shawn Kaufmann

Booking a Cruise? First Time Cruiser? Reviewing Cruise Lines via the web has become increasingly difficult. Each Cruise Line is considerably different and with more than 20 major lines sailing the high seas the choices are limitless.

Cruise Zanza Blue recently rolled out a cruise line “SnapShots” section within its website. With Major Cruise Lines rolling out “cutting edge” websites it seems content is more difficult to find. Zanza Blue has implemented simple “layout” pages with a “Long Scroll” approach. Simple design with all the information a client may need. The pages display almost no visual appeal; you may think your stepping back in time from WebPages of the past. The up side is a cruise consumer can pop through and scan over the content. Want to know what each cruise lines approach is? You only need to check the first few lines. How about dining options and kids programs? It’s all on one page. Currently Zanza Blue offers information on 19 cruise lines with plans to add Cruise West onto its booking options.

Cruise Zanza Blue not only lends a helping hand with choosing a personalized cruise but offers expert advice first hand. The Zanza Blue “niche” is that every Cruise Travel Agent or as Zanza Blue states “Zanza Travel Concierge” are all past cruise ship crew members. An interesting approach considering the Cruise Line’s pick up the tab for these services which gives cruise consumers first rate service and knowledge without costing the consumer a dime.

Princess Cruise Line – Alaska Video Wins Cinematography Award

Princess Cruise Lines

Princess Cruise Lines

Princess Cruises’ “The Heart of Alaska” video won the “Best Cinematography” award at the New York Independent Film & Video Festival, one of the largest independent film festivals in the world. “The Heart of Alaska” beat out nearly 100 entries for the award at the festival’s recent Los Angeles competition. “The Heart of Alaska” is a high-definition documentary that showcases the Princess cruise-tour experience by depicting the land, wildlife and people of Alaska. The 26-minute film, photographed and directed by Princess video producer Scott Martin, features interviews with some of the people who tell their stories of life in Alaska’s interior.

“We’re delighted that the judges at the New York Independent Film & Video Festival recognized how superbly this film was photographed,” said Jan Swartz, Princess senior vice president. “‘The Heart of Alaska’ may well be the most unique cruise destination video in the industry because it uses a documentary style to tell its story through local voices. With stunning photography and music, it’s just like something you’d find on a nature channel…or in a theater.”

Viewers meet rangers from both Denali and Wrangell-St. Elias national parks, Alaska natives, homesteaders and dog mushers who share an insider’s perspective of life in the 49th state. Other voices include a bush pilot, a captain from Fairbanks’ iconic riverboat and a mountain climber.

The film also brings the audience up-close to the wildlife of Denali National Park, including bears, moose, Dall sheep, and caribou. Soaring photography takes viewers high above the world’s tallest peaks, including Mount McKinley. “The Heart of Alaska” is the first in a series of Princess videos offering a look at the company’s destinations. It can be purchased aboard the line’s Alaska ships or at any of Princess’ five Alaska wilderness lodges.

Port of San Diego California Welcomes Carnival Cruise Line’s Elation New Itinerary

Carnival Cruise Lines’ Carnival Elation will begin a new schedule offering three- and four-day cruises from San Diego to Catalina Island and Ensenada starting Feb. 12. The 2,052-passenger ship currently operates four- and five-day cruises to Mexico from San Diego and will continue that program until the new service begins.

On its new route, Carnival Elation will depart on Thursdays on three-day cruises to Ensenada. Four-day cruises will depart on Sundays and visit Ensenada and Catalina Island. This marks the first time passengers can depart from San Diego and voyage to Catalina Island aboard a large cruise ship.

“We’re pleased to have this new itinerary available,” said Michael Bixler, chairman of the board of port commissioners. “It’s a perfect fit for local residents who want a pleasant way to travel to Catalina Island as well as for visitors attending a convention here who would like to include a pre or post cruise.”

The three- and four-day cruises are expected to attract 226,000 passengers annually, a boost of 33 percent over the 169,000 annual passengers that have embarked on the five-day cruises. With the shorter cruises, Carnival Elation will complete 100 ship calls annually, up from 75 for the longer cruises.

Carnival will continue to offer seasonal eight-day cruises from San Diego to the Mexican Riviera aboard Carnival Spirit. Each homeport cruise ship call at the Port of San Diego has an economic impact of about $2 million.

This figure is derived from the average amount that a cruise ship passenger spends while in the San Diego region, along with the employment associated with serving the cruise ship and the many businesses and services that support it. They include food companies, linen services, trucking companies, fuel companies, landside tour companies and florists.

In 2007, the Port of San Diego had 238 cruise calls with more than 700,000 passengers. By the end of 2008, the port anticipates that number to jump to 252 cruises and more than 800,000 passengers. The Port currently has nine cruise lines making calls here. To accommodate the growing cruise business, the port will be building a cruise ship terminal on Broadway Pier and updating the B Street Cruise Ship Terminal.

The design for the new terminal at the Broadway Pier features a two-story structure with a modern design. It will include areas for passenger check-in, baggage processing and Customs and Border Protection. Construction for the approximately 50,000 square foot structure is planned to begin around late spring of 2009.

Oasis of the Seas – Back Office Buzz – Cattle Call or Brilliance?

Published by Shawn Kaufmann

Royal Caribbean Newset Ship

Royal Caribbean Newset Ship

VIEW THE NEW VIDEO Oasis of the Seas in the podcast/video section at  www.zanza.com

The buzz over the last year regarding Royal Caribbean International’s Geneses Class was very mixed. This included our own Travel Concierge’s (If you are unaware Zanza Travel Concierges are all ex-crew members). We all new someone would come along and build bigger and better. When you look at the cruise industry as a whole it really seems to be “Who has the newest toys” which is great for cruisers.

Many of us can remember the launch of the Carnival Fantasy Class and the RCI Sovereign Class, then came Carnival with the Destiny Class and we can even note Cunard’s Queen Mary. The one that topped everyone in the game was the RCI Eagle Class which latter would be called Explorer of the Seas.

That was truly innovation in motion and created a big buzz. It was risky considering the money put into that project and all of the obstacles. Many of us held our breath during those sea trials. End result RCI pulled it off with flying colors.

Since that time pretty much every cruise line has spruced up every new ship similar to Automotive Manufacturers presenting new models, the concept is the same, four wheels, engine, doors, etc. with the new add-on’s being great but not a show stopper.

When many of our Travel Concierges (keep in mind less then 20 Concierges are listed on Zanza.com but there are well over 75 in total) started to talk about the Geneses the conversation bounced back and forth with all of us thinking roughly the same thing “Cattle Call” and “Packed Like Sardines”.

We all figured she would have the RCI Standards, Rock Climbing Wall, Ice Rink, etc etc. But come on “Geneses Class” was a bit of a stretch (seemed like RCI wanted more paying Guests per voyage). This comes from a group of Concierges that remembers “The Next Level” presented to the crew of RCI by the office. It had a great ring to it but it really meant many cost cutting measures for the crew.

To give you an example it included many of us crew only having cabin cleaning services and fresh towels every other day. In actuality that was a very good move by RCI in searching to cut costs without effecting clients.

After tracking and logging the information that was released the picture started to change, that’s when the “back office” buzz really stated to get heated. Then came the first video, not to impressive video wise “Big Ship Being Built”, many of us at Zanza has physically been in the yards with the builds, refurbishments and dry docks. To the general public these video’s show visions of grandeur.

For many of us here at Zanza we get a slight chill remembering those times being on the ship with no air conditioning, no showers, temperamental toilets and the occasional black out “which always seemed to happen while in the shower soaped up”. Well that video left us with more questions then before. It pretty much confirmed what we already knew.

Like an unfinished house it was not until everything came together and it was spelled out did the “Wow” factor truly hit. The new video put it all together. Not only do our clients want in on the oasis action but so do many of the Concierges. Get in line! It appears RCI has done it again, just when Carnival and some of the other lines were getting close to the bar RCI set a few years back RCI bumped it way up.

We feel this ship truly is a floating resort. The AuqaTheater is brilliant along with all of the other new innovations. The inside cabins having balconies is another great move. Once you see the layout we wonder what might be best for our Clients. Outside cabins have the sea, inside cabins with balconies now hover over all the action. Which view is better? Water? Action?

Of course the cabins near the aft that overlook the AquaTheater and have views of the ocean and the action is the best option. Normally we never recommend aft cabins due to movement and the possibilities of storms but this ship changes the game.

Considering another one is on the build we can see RCI’s commitment. We will get into the cost consideration regarding booking the Oasis in a future blog so stay tuned campers!

In closing, it’s interesting to see how many changes have happened in only a decade.  If you need a helping hand finding the right ship for your needs feel free to contact any of our Concierges. If you cannot decide shoot us an email at Travel@zanza.com and we’ll pick one for you.

Take Care, and stay tuned!

Holland America Cruise Line Creates Mobile Website

Holland America Line

Holland America Line

Holland America Line has a mobile-friendly version of its website for all devices able to connect to the Internet. “More and more people are using mobile devices to get things done when traveling, while waiting in line, and at other so-called down times,” said Richard D. Meadows, executive vice president-marketing, sales and guest programs. “So, our new accessibility will allow them to check details and plan a cruise wherever they are.” Web surfers will be automatically redirected to the new mobile site if a user accesses the site from a mobile device. To mobilize the site, images were removed and layouts simplified for use on a mobile device. The most popular areas of the site have been adapted for mobile use.

These include the research tools Cruise and CruiseTour Finder to find travel options and pricing, ports information to look up such things as departure port details and directions while in a cab, a complete For Booked Guests section for current cruisers, and the ability for past guests to look up their Mariner Society number on-line. A special phone number is listed for those who want to call in and book from their mobile device, too, since bookings cannot be made through the mobile website.

Carnival Cruise Lines – Cruise Ship Elation to Shift to Select Cruises

Carnival Cruise Lines

Carnival Cruise Lines

Carnival Cruise Lines will deploy the 2,052-passenger Carnival Elation on a new three- and four-day cruise schedule from San Diego beginning Feb. 12. The ship currently operates four- and five-day cruises from San Diego and will continue that program through the Feb. 7 departure.

On its new route, Carnival Elation will depart Thursdays on three-day cruises to Ensenada. Four-day cruises will depart Sundays and visit Ensenada and Catalina Island.

Carnival offers a similar program on the Carnival Paradise from Long Beach, Calif., with departures on Fridays and Mondays. “Between the two ships, consumers will have a choice of two very popular departure points, Long Beach and San Diego, as well as four different departure days each week to select from,” said Terry Thornton, Carnival’s senior vice president of marketing planning.

“These will be the only ships in the Southern California market offering three- and four-day cruises starting in 2009, and with short getaways currently a trend among North American consumers, combined with the inherent value of a cruise, these voyages represent an extremely desirable vacation choice.”

Carnival also offers longer voyages from Southern California. The Carnival Pride operates seven-day Mexican Riviera cruises from Long Beach year-round (to be replaced by the new Carnival Splendor in March) and the Carnival Spirit offers seasonal eight-day Mexican Riviera voyages from San Diego. Reservations are currently being accepted for the new three- and four-day cruises from San Diego.

President of Cruise Zanza Blue Announces Plans to Launch Weekly Zanza Blue “Cruise Themed” Podcasts

Published by Ania Drechsler

J. Shawn Kaufmann President of Zanza Blue Travel Services announced the plans to launch weekly cruise orientated podcasts beginning early September. Twenty four podcasts have already been filmed and are currently being edited through Celestino Productions.

Mr. Kaufmann explained that after researching all available travel podcasts the results were poor. Many would be first time cruisers really don’t have a clear avenue to answer some common cruise related questions in a distinct, short and informative podcast. In addition, with the development of mega travel search engines and the increasing growth of the cruise industry finding personable advice is difficult.

The Zanza Blue Cruise Podcasts are hosted by Mr. Kaufmann and entertainer Johnny Favourite. The eccentric Mr. Favourite definitely brings personality to the podcasts. Johnny Favourite created the “Johnny Favourite Swing Orchestra” in the late 90’s. His accomplishments include several awards with a Juno being the pinnacle. Johnny Favourite is currently in Toronto Canada recording a new album.

Mr. Kaufmann stated “We wanted to create short informative podcasts that were entertaining enough to view while still delivering cruise information, without the podcasts coming off as a corporate style commercial. That’s why I wanted to host these podcasts, its not often you see a CEO getting hands on. I wanted to show who we are. I was also fortunate to recruit Johnny Favourite on this project. Considering he spent a good amount of time working on cruise ships he has the experience and with his wacky personality I figured we would deliver podcasts that people want to watch”.

The podcasts were filmed with a simple visual theme focusing more on the hosts and the information. A preliminary promotional podcast has already been released and can be viewed on the Zanza Blue website.  Production podcasts featuring specific themes will be released through the Zanza Blue website, Utube, Podcast.com and ITunes in early September.

The Zanza Blue Team is currently implementing RSS options to accompany the release of the Cruise podcasts along with cruise line specific pages on the Zanza Blue website. Mr. Kaufmann stated “I feel that many of the modern day websites are getting more difficult to navigate. We are keeping the pages very basic with a good amount of information on one page. Even though it may be a long scroll page everything a future cruiser might want to know about a specific cruise line is right there, plus they can click though 18 different cruise lines all on one website instead of surfing from site to site”.

Zanza Blue is a full service Travel Agency. When it comes to booking a cruise they feature ex-cruise ship crew members as Zanza Travel Concierges. Zanza Blue focuses on traditional concierge service 24/7. When it comes to getting a helping hand on cruise booking information it doesn’t get any better then Zanza Blue.

The full list of cruise podcasts titles scheduled to be released on a weekly basis is available below. Zanza Blue will be interested to hear public feed back and suggestions regarding the theme of future podcasts.

Thousands of travel agents throughout the country will hold a variety of events to promote cruising and highlighting the choice of destinations open to today’s cruisers. “Cruising is becoming ever more popular but there are still some misconceptions about the industry,” said Andy Harmer, business development director of ACE.

“National Cruise Week is a great way to show that there really is a cruise for everyone. The choice now offered by companies is immense – there is a cruise to suit all ages and all pockets, you can find intimacy or full-on fun, snow or sun, desert or jungle, relaxation or activity, the choice is truly endless.” National Cruise Week also supports the work of WWF in protecting marine species and the oceans. Designated travel agents have committed to adopting a dolphin on behalf of customers buying a cruise holiday.

Cunard Luxury Cruise Line – Promotes 2009 World Cruises and Segments

Cunard-three-queens

Cunard says World Cruises aboard its flagship Queen Mary 2 and the new Queen Victoria — as well as shorter segments offer a value because they are priced in U.S. dollars.

The World Cruises are “more sensible than comparable five-star travel experiences on land since, at sea, meals and entertainment are included,” Cunard said. Both ships offer shorter segment voyages ranging from 15 to 30 days with fares starting at $122 per day, per person.

Space is still available on some of the most popular segments, including Queen Mary 2’s 28-day Fort Lauderdale-to-Los Angeles segment with fares starting at $122 per day, per person; 15-day Los Angeles-to-Sydney segment with fares starting at $160 per day; and 31-day Singapore-to-New York segment priced from $171 per day.

Queen Victoria’s 17-day New York-to-Los Angeles segment offers fares from $200 per day, per person; the 23-day Los Angeles-to-Sydney segment starts at $209 per day; the 27-day Sydney to Singapore starts at $237 per day; and 32-day Singapore-to-Southampton is price from $215 per day, per person.

Among the speakers scheduled to appear during the World Cruises are oceanographer-meteorologist Joe Bishop, astronaut Walter Cunningham, ocean liner authority and color commentator William Miller and adventurer Harvey Mann.

Departing from Fort Lauderdale simultaneously with Queen Victoria on Jan. 13, Queen Mary 2’s “Epic Expedition” features 26 port calls on five continents. Included is a call to Alexandria (for Cairo/Giza) for visits to the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx.

Maiden calls include Lima, Peru; Osaka, Japan; Bangkok, Thailand; and Salalah, Oman. The ship will journey in a westward direction, sailing around South America to Los Angeles, then across the Pacific Ocean to Honolulu. From there, stops include Pago Pago, American Samoa; Auckland, New Zealand; Sydney, Australia; and Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The voyage culminates in New York on April 14. Fares start from $19,362 per person, double occupancy.

Eighteen maiden calls are highlights of Queen Victoria’s westbound circumnavigation. First-time visits include Apia, Western Samoa; Aqaba (for Petra), Jordan; Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; Cairns (for the Great Barrier Reef), Australia; Christchurch (Lyttelton), New Zealand; Nagasaki, Japan; Nha Trang, Vietnam; Nuku’alofa, Tonga; Phuket, Thailand; Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Pusan, South Korea; Rabaul, Papua New Guinea; and Willemstad, Curaçao.

The ship will transit the Panama Canal and Suez Canal and visit Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Shanghai, China; and Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands, as well as an overnight call in Sydney. Queen Victoria will also call on Mormugao in Goa, on the west coast of India, which is known for its beaches and Portuguese architecture; and Hobart, Tasmania.

The journey concludes in Southampton on April 20, where guests may opt to continue their voyage with a six-day transatlantic crossing to New York aboard Queen Mary 2. Fares for Queen Victoria’s 99-day “Exploration of Distant Horizons” World Cruise start from $20,955 per person, double occupancy.

USA TODAY Travel – Carnival Cruise Line employee pens new tell-all book about jobs onboard

Cruise Zanza Blue - President –  Shawn Kaufmann – comment is included in this post. www.CruiseZanzaBlue.com

Cruise Zanza Blue

Cruise Zanza Blue

USA TODAY Link

This item was written by USA TODAY travel editor Chris Gray. Gray is serving as Guest Editor of The Cruise Log this week while USA TODAY Cruise Editor Gene Sloan is on assignment in Europe.

No matter how much fun you’re having on your cruises, chances are the real party is going on in the crew’s quarters.

Or at least that’s what Brian David Bruns, a former restaurant worker for Carnival Cruise Lines, would have you think. His new book, Cruise Confidental ($14.95, Travelers’ Tales), outlines his year as a restaurant worker on ships such as the Conquest, the Legend and the Fantasy — an appropriate name as Bruns devotes many pages toward describing his seemingly endless parade of gorgeous international co-workers.

(He attempts to stay faithful to his tempermental Transylvanian girlfriend Bianca, despite all-night toga parties and round-the-clock drinkfests. Whether or not he succumbs to temptation is an underlying plot point).

Bruns isn’t the first to dish about sex on the high seas. Former Carnival assistant cruise director Micha Berman told similar tales of debauchery in his book, Permanent Passenger: My Life on a Cruise Ship earlier this year. It seems these cruise ship jobs—which come with 80 hour workweeks, the benefits of pretty co-workers notwithstanding—draw people who like to work and play hard.

So how about it, Cruise Loggers. Would you give up a year of your life to work on a cruise ship? –Chris Gray

I just had to make a comment in reference to this subject. First, I have not read the book nor do I think I will commit the $15 bucks. I have heard several crew members state they would write a book one day. It’s good to see that this guy did.

However, I have worked onboard 28 ships in many levels anywhere from 4 months to 13 months non stop spanning over a decade. I also had the pleasure of working several lines, Carnival being my favorite with the respect to crew morale. Now I must admit great times were had onboard. A little know secret is those great parties have been on a downslide since the 80’s. The 1990’s were pretty much the last great hoorah.

With the lines becoming larger and larger more of an office style corporate presence has developed, and for good reason. Rule books that can choke a horse, breathalyzers being standard equipment for security guards to keep a check on crew, let’s not forget in a state of emergency those crew members are your line of defense.

That too I account for since the July of 1998 Ecstasy fire in the port of Miami was my largest effort towards saving the ship and keeping the guests safe by all of us crew putting ourselves on the line. There are some very serious moments onboard that test your loyalties, you would be surprised how loyal those crew members are to the ship (and not necessary the corporation) and to fellow crew members and importantly the ships passengers.

With the addition of security camera’s covering every crew area and of course the unfortunate few who screwed it up for the rest of forcing management to clamp down on the good old times type fun, making it much quieter below decks. A noise complaint from a fellow crew member will result in a few security guards arriving in a matter of minutes breaking up a would be cabin party. With some of the new rules in place things have gotten even quieter.

Recently Carnival made all crew bars (and crew cabins) non smoking. Not that’s a way to clear out a bar. It’s not like New York were you can go onto the sidewalk to sneek a smoke. Let’s not forget a very large amount of the crew are foreign and smoking is still just fine back home. You would be amazed at how smoky crew bars really are (Alternatively Royal Caribbean is bring most of the crew bars out to the crew area open decks leaving everyone pretty happy).

Bottom line, I have hundreds of great stories that to many seem outrageous, that does include the things I have seen Guests do. (In fact on many ships the guest nightlife is better than the crew’s). Yes I have been to a crew toga party. Those along with many other “Theme” crew parties are hosted and monitored by the ships management.

As far as the sex? If you put nearly 1000 single people between the ages of 21 and 35 things will happen. Here is the downside, many ships the ratio of females to males are very different giving the gals a pick at the litter. From all my experiences any guy who slept around would get shut down pretty quickly (word travels lightning fast and gossip is king for crew) no gal wants a guy who sleeps around on or off ships. Unless this guy was the sexiest man walking I find huge conquests unlikely. Well then again, his hit list would tend to be much higher than normal life considering the lifestyle and a new ship brings a fresh reputation. I of course brought sand to the beach. My wife (back in the in the 90’s my girlfriend) and I worked the ships together.

Yes we all have some drinks and have a good old time but if you have a picture of “Animal House” when it comes to a crew bar your in for a surprise. 99% of the time we are all just winding down from a hard days work. But it much more lively then living back home. Working on a cruise ship isn’t a job, considering the hours and dedication it’s a passion. I loved every minute and do not regret a moment. I have made serious friends all over the globe. I have an average of two people a month flying through and staying at my house who I met onboard the ships. My wife and I do get the itch to jump back onboard but we are trying to stick to land and be loyal to our dogs. (Since we cannot bring them with).

Well if you have read this far I am surprised. Looking above I surely typed out allot. I think your all right about “Sex and Parties” sell books.

ABC the Batchelorette TV’s Trista & Ryan will christen Ruby Princess Cruise Ship

Provided by USA Today Crusie Log Blog
http://www.usatoday.com/travel/cruises/item.aspx?type=blog&ak=54151362.blog

Now this is just too cute. Remember Trista and Ryan Sutter, the celebrity couple who met on ABC’s hit reality series The Bachelorette six years ago?

Princess Cruises announced today that the famed love birds have agreed to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary by christening the line’s new ship, the Ruby Princess, when it debuts on Nov. 6.

Princess, of course, has long touted itself as being the most romantic cruise line at sea (it is the Love Boat line, after all), so it should perhaps come as no surprise that it’s once again playing up the romance angle with its newest vessel. With Trista and Ryan on board, the line says the theme of the inaugural celebration will be “romantic moments and milestones.”

Trista and Ryan, for those of you who don’t follow such things, are one of the best-known romantic duos in recent broadcast history. They’re the first and only couple from The Bachelor and Bachelorette franchises who have actually gotten married (they also now have a son, Max). As Bachelorette aficionados will recall, Ryan proposed to Trista on the show’s finale in November 2002.

Trista and Ryan wed on Dec. 6, 2003 in an elaborate television ceremony watched by 26 million viewers, making it one of the most widely viewed episodes in the history of reality TV. They now live in Vail, Colo., where Ryan works as a firefighter and Trista is a stay-at-home mom and designer for her new diaper bag line, Trista Baby.

The 3,070-passenger Ruby Princess will spend the winter sailing seven-night Western Caribbean cruises out of Ft. Lauderdale that stop in Ocho Rios, Grand Cayman, Cozumel and Princess Cays, the line’s private island in the Bahamas. Next spring the ship moves to Europe for 12-day sailings in the Mediterranean and Greek Islands.

“Through our strategic partnership with Celebrity Cruises, we are excited to build on our tradition of offering uniquely positioned products to meet the demands of the leisure traveler through each of the world-class brands within the WTH portfolio” says David Crooks, vice president-cruise for World Travel Holdings.

Guests on Celebrity Solstice will experience a series of brand-defining, first-in-the-industry features onboard, including a half-acre Lawn Club with real grass, a glassblowing show and studio developed with The Corning Museum of Glass, new dining venues offering trendsetting cuisine and design, and widely varied entertainment, including new theater productions in partnership with Poet Theatricals. The 2,850-guest vessel also will have staterooms 15 percent larger than those on previous Celebrity ships, 90 percent of which will be outside, and 85 percent of all staterooms will have verandas.

Article, Cruise Travel Agents – AJC.com To ‘travel agent’ or not to ‘travel agent’?

To ‘travel agent’ or not to ‘travel agent’? Advice on the many ways to book a cruise

By Theresa Walsh Giarrusso
For The Journal-Constitution

Article shown at AJC.com http://www.ajc.com/travel/content/travel/cruises/stories/cruiseguide/agents.html
My husband and I fiercely debated whether to use a travel agent or to book our cruise online by ourselves.

My husband is a Web savvy business traveler who books flights, hotels and cars online frequently. And while I am computer friendly, I find it comforting to have a live person saying at least 20 times, “No there won’t be a life boat dangling in front of the window you’re paying extra to have.”

So we compromised. We talked with a travel agent, second guessed the travel agent and spent a week researching online. And then we booked the original cruise the travel agent suggested through the agent.

For many travelers price will decide how they book their trip. Are they going to find the best deal online, from the cruise line itself or from a travel agent?

“It’s the first time the cruise lines have price integrity across the market place,” says Brad Jones, director of cruise, tour and destination services for Orbitz. “Everyone really has the same rate for cruises out there.”

Bob Sharak, executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Cruise Lines International Association, agrees. “The price is the price. The cruise industry on a whole is trying to level the playing field.”

Sharak explains this is happening because the demand for cruises in 2004 has been high and has kept up with the supply of new ships. The CLIA expects 2005 to be the same, so cruise lines do not need to offer deep discounts. In fact, last year some cruise lines forbid travel agents from cutting their own commissions to offer clients discounts.

On the cruises we were looking at, I didn’t find cheaper prices online or from the cruise line itself. There will be rare exceptions (group discounts or high volume bookings) where you might find a lesser rate, so cross check to be sure.

So who books your cruise isn’t much of a factor, but when you book your cruise can lower your price. Because the ships are filling up, cruise lines are not forced to offer discounts at the last minute. This used to be common practice.

You will find the cheapest rates and best cabins (balconies!) if you book early, says Sharak. (One exception is if you are flexible enough to travel on one- or two-weeks notice.)

My experts varied slightly on how early to book. Sharak says 4 to 6 months in advance.

Aimée J. Ricca, owner of Bonne Amie Travel in Rockport, Maine, and one of the experts featured on the Travel Channel’s Vacation Challenge, advises between 2 to 9 months for most times of the year. For New Year’s and Christmas, book at least 9 months (and up to 18 months ahead for the best and worst cabins — they tend to go first). For Thanksgiving and school vacations, she says 6 to 12 months.

January to March is the busiest time of the year to book and 30 percent to 50 percent of the cabins are reserved in the first quarter of the year, says Sharak.

Now don’t panic about having to book early and the possibility of prices dropping. In the present cruise climate, the price is unlikely to drop. But if it does, Ricca and Sharak say that any good travel agent will track your fare and most of the time will be able to adjust your charges accordingly or give you an upgrade. (Who knew?) Some online sites also will adjust the fare, too, but you’ll have to call them with the change.
Booking through a travel agent

With so much information out there, a good travel agent can help you focus in a short time on a few lines or a few ships or a few destinations that would best match your needs. The agent I called immediately started asking questions and within five minutes focused on the cruise lines I felt we would be interested in.

Ricca says most Internet travel sites are actually travel agencies — that just make you do all the work. Here are some other reasons to use a travel agent:

• 90 percent of all cruises are booked through travel agents. Many of our readers suggested the same thing: “Use a professional travel agent.”

• You do not get charged any more to use a travel agent than if you booked it through the line directly. “The cruise lines pay them, it’s not money out of your pocket,” says Sharak.

• A good travel agent should give you unbiased advice. We had already tentatively settled on a port and ship because we wanted to drive to the port to save money. When we told the travel agent our plan, she said she could not in good conscience put us on that ship and she refused to book it if that was our final choice. She didn’t feel it would fit the experience we were seeking. I don’t think the cruise line would have told us that.

• Many travel agents are certified through the Cruise Lines International Association and The Travel Institute. They have to pass tests and cruise in many cases to become accredited.

• A good travel agent should be watching your cruise fare and should adjust it if the price happens to go lower (unlikely at this time, but it does make you feel more confident about booking early!) Some online travel agencies will adjust to if you spot the change. Double check with your agent or online service to make sure they do this.

• With a travel agent you have someone to blame and/or someone to go to bat for you if something is goes wrong. “As a travel agent I have more clout than you do going direct,” says Ricca. She explains she has a representative with each cruise line and is booking volumes of cruises each year — they have more reason to keep her happy when she’s recommending lines.
Booking online

Brad Jones, director of cruise, tour and destination services for Orbitz, says that booking online is all about convenience and information.

“We’ve taken all the information that used to be for travel agents’ eyes only, taken all that information that used to be a mystery to people, and made it accessible and easy to navigate.”

He says getting people to feel comfortable booking cruises online is a progression — first people got used to ordering flowers online, then they got familiar with booking flights or paying a bill. He says next they’ll be comfortable with booking a more expensive trip, such as a cruise. Many people already are.

• Online travel sites are generally open 24/7 all year long. We researched our cruises at 10 p.m. at night after the kids were finally in bed.

• Online sites offer powerful research tools, such as photos of the interiors of individual ships, deck diagrams, passenger reviews, professional reviews and matrixes to compare itineraries side by side. However, be wary of how old some ship information might be. One site made multiple references to changes coming to ships in 2003 — very disconcerting.

• Using the online services I could see how prices changed week to week. We could sail on several weeks and after seeing those price variations ($200 in some cases); we chose the cheapest week to travel.

• You may stumble across lines, boats and destinations you didn’t know existed.

• Online travel sites offer the ability to research each line without getting entered into the line’s data banks so no annoying phone calls or emails.

• Many online sites do offer round-the-clock operators to take your questions. Orbitz says their cruise specialists have sold cruises for at least three years and have toured ships or cruised themselves. You can ask for the same person.

• Since big discount aren’t being given, some online services are finding ways to sweeten their deals, such as offering triple reward points on your credit card, free money for your ship credit card or gift cards to retailers such as Target.

• I was worried that if I booked online I wouldn’t get to pick the exact cabin I wanted or choose my dining time. When I finally got brave I explored deeper into the site, I did find that it gave me those options and even asked if we were celebrating a birthday or anniversary. It also gave multiple chances to back out if you decided this wasn’t the cruise you wanted.
Booking through a cruise line

• If you know which line you want to take, the cruise line should be able to answer all your questions in great detail.

• The cruise line is going to offer the same price as travel agents. However, they are not going to tell you about any other cruise lines that might match your needs.

• If you register on many of the cruise sites for information, the lines will contact you often. My husband asked for information from one line and we received weekly phone calls and emails for months.

• Once you’ve talked with a travel agency, the cruise lines do not want to cannibalize on that relationship. When I called to compare prices, the cruise line told me to call back my travel agent and book it through them.

To some, researching and booking a cruise is a fun and stress-free experience, complete with happy memories and even new friendships. If this concept sounds utterly foreign to you, you’ve probably been spending too much time searching the Web and puzzling over pricing. What you need is a travel agent.
It’s a common misperception that travel agents can’t get the same low prices you can find yourself on the Internet. That’s true — at least in some cases — when you’re talking about airfare, but when it comes to booking a cruise, travel agents can often find better pricing and provide more personal service than any website. The secret to their success? Cruise lines are actively courting them.

A good travel agent understands the complicated cruise booking process and can direct you to the right cruise line, itinerary and cabin type for your personality. The result: satisfied customers almost guaranteed to cruise again (a win-win for all involved). It should come as no surprise, then, that the cruise lines offer their best agents discounts and incentives to pass on to clients to keep those bookings coming in. They also pay commission, so agents don’t have to charge you more in order to take a cut.

In addition to saving you money, the best agents can act as consumer advocates should something go wrong. They’ll also turn the planning process into an enjoyable experience and take the burden of research off of your shoulders.

Saving money

Many Web-savvy shoppers turn to the Internet for low cruise prices, but it’s the travel agents who have access to the unpublicized deals and upgrades. “Pricing is comparable across the board,” says Matt Cervone, owner of Just Cruises & Vacations, “but legitimate agents have relationships with cruise lines that get them offers not available on the websites.” These unpublished promotions can range from discounted pricing to free or cheap upgrades and onboard credit. Agents also know about military, senior and location-based discounts that might not be easy to find online; they also have access to reduced single-supplement prices.

In addition, many agents book their customers on “guarantee rates,” which means guests don’t pick a specific cabin but are guaranteed a stateroom in a certain category or above. These fares let guests risk getting a less desirable location in order to have a chance at an upgrade. “Cruise lines really look at how you’ve booked when they assign upgrades,” says Jo Ellen Kamen, CTC, a leisure specialist at Go Travel. “I can’t remember the last time one of my clients didn’t get upgraded.” High-volume travel agencies will get first crack at those better cabins, while individuals who booked via the Internet will be the last in line.

Travel agents also get access to special deals by belonging to consortiums, such as Ensemble Travel or Virtuoso, which negotiate extra benefits with travel providers on behalf of their clients. The member travel agencies can pass these bonuses on to their customers, offering them perks such as free airfare and shipboard credit. Some agents even surprise their clients with a bon voyage gift, such as a free bottle of champagne.

Another way a travel agent can save you money is by being a fare watchdog. Some cruise lines will refund your money or give you shipboard credit if the price of your cruise goes down after you’ve booked. “I monitor cruises from the initial deposit to the sail date for price adjustments,” says Kamen. If the price drops, she gets that money back for her clients. You may not have time to check the cruise fares every day, but a good travel agent will do the job for you.

Stress-free trip planning

“Going on the Internet can be time-consuming and terribly confusing,” says Cecily Macdonald, owner of Nautical Adventures. “Travel agents have resources available so they don’t have to search for the answers.”

A good travel agency has lots of experience under its roof. The agents go on many cruises and ship tours each year, attend seminars and classes on the various cruise lines, and follow industry trends. They can tell you which ships are a little rough around the edges, and which cruise lines would be a good fit for your interests.

Travel agents will make sure you avoid beginners’ mistakes, as well. They’re knowledgeable about passport and visa requirements, and will help you get your travel documents in order. “It’s very important to remember that if you miss the ship [on a Caribbean island, for example], you can’t fly back without a passport,” says Macdonald. You might not know that bit of passport law, but a travel agent will make sure you’re covered for any situation that may come up. An agent may also recommend appropriate travel insurance and help you navigate the confusing legalese of the various policies.

Inexperienced travelers can often make mistakes when making their pre- or post-cruise travel arrangements. “Some people who book their Europe cruise online don’t book the air travel right and miss the ship,” says Kamen. Travel agents are well versed in booking transportation, accommodations and packages and can help you sort out the nuances of getting to and from your ship. They can also offer alternatives to the cruise lines’ pre- and post-cruise land packages if you want to save money or travel on a different itinerary.

Problem solving

Say your flight to the cruise port gets delayed or canceled, and you fear you might miss the ship. If you’ve booked online, you’re pretty much on your own. But if a travel agent arranged your trip, he or she can work on your behalf to make alternate arrangements and solve the problem. Your travel agent is your consumer advocate.

A travel agent also has more power to fix a booking mistake. If you accidentally book your cruise for the wrong week, you may have a tough time changing the reservation or getting your money back. A travel agent has a relationship with the cruise lines, and can often fix mistakes with little trouble.

How to find the right travel agent

You can find a travel agent through the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and Vacation.com, but Cervone recommends walking into a local agency. He says, “You want to develop a relationship with an agent, so go on instinct. Find someone who knows what they’re talking about.”

Look to see if the agent has CLIA accreditation or is a Travel Institute destination specialist, proving she’s taken courses in selling cruises and travel to specific locations. You can also ask if the agency is a member of a travel consortium or is a key account with any of the cruise lines — those relationships not only prove the dedication of the agency, but its ability to get extra deals for you. Finally, you may want to ask if the agency has a dedicated cruise person or department, and how many years of experience the agents have.

Above all, you want to look for an agent that is interested in building a relationship with you. The agent should spend some time asking you about your interests in order to find the best fit for your vacation. He or she should return your calls or emails promptly and stay in regular communication with you between trips.

Ultimately, you don’t have to give up your Internet addiction. By all means, keep checking the Web for great deals and low prices. The next time you find an enticing offer, why not run it by a travel agency? The agents might be able to offer you the same price plus a little personal service, or show you why the deal isn’t as great as you thought. Speaking to an agent doesn’t commit you to booking with that person. Think of it as another step in your research plan — one that might net you better deals and service than the ‘Net.

Holland America Line Surpasses $1 Million Mark for Breast Cancer Research

Holland America Line

Holland America Line

Holland America Line surpassed the million-dollar mark in contributions raised for breast cancer research through its On Deck for the Cure program. The line will celebrate the milestone this week with receptions and recognition on the ships in its fleet and at its corporate headquarters in Seattle. Since the program began in 2006, On Deck for the Cure has raised nearly $1.1 million for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Noting the success of the ship-based program — where ship guests make donations for walking laps around the deck — Richard Meadows, executive vice president-marketing, sales and guest programs, said the company has recently extended its contract with Komen to continue the program in the years to come. “We’re overwhelmed with the spirit and generosity of our guests,” Meadows said. “On every cruise, our guests take time from their holiday to raise money to help fight this disease. Holland America Line is proud to be a vehicle for this most worthy cause.”

In 2007, one charter group onboard the Maasdam turned out nearly 800 participants, smashing the previous single-walk record of 349 walkers. Plus, the 2008 Grand World Voyage on the Amsterdam raised more than $50,000 in its fund-raising walks. “We are very appreciative of the contribution goals set by Holland America Line,” said Katrina McGhee, vice president of marketing for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. “Through leveraging the support of staff and guests alike, the company has reached the million-dollar mark in less than two years. This is quite unique and an accomplishment achieved by only a few companies in our Million Dollar Council.”

Holland America estimates that more than 80,000 guests have participated in more than 1,000 walks on cruises worldwide since the program began in 2006. Participants pledge $15 or more and then walked around the ship’s deck for five kilometers. Depending on the ship, guests walk up to 12 laps to reach 5K. Each participant receives an On Deck for the Cure T-shirt and a pink wristband as well as an invitation to a pink lemonade party following the walk. Buoyed by the success of Holland America’s On Deck for the Cure program, last year Carnival Corp. extended the year-round donation program to four other Carnival brands — Carnival Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line, and Costa Cruises’ Florida-based vessels.

On Deck for the Cure, presented by the Holland America Line Foundation, builds upon the company’s existing corporate giving programs, which contribute millions of dollars each year in cash sponsorships, in-kind shipboard events, free and reduced-fare cruise donations for nonprofit fundraising events, United Way participation and other philanthropic activities. This summer, Holland America will host the Seattle Komen Affiliate’s annual Survivor Celebration luncheon for more than 400 guests onboard the Oosterdam. The Holland America Line Foundation donates 75 percent, or a minimum of $11.25, of each $15 donation to Komen for the Cure. The remaining 25 percent covers a portion of the program costs. For more information, call 877-SAIL-HAL or visit www.hollandamerica.com or www.komen.org.
