MSC Cruises Launches Website on Upcoming Fantasia

MSC Cruises has launched the official website for MSC Fantasia, the largest ship ever commissioned by a European shipowner, which will be inaugurated in Naples on Dec. 18.

The site, www.mscfantasia.com, is entirely dedicated to MSC Cruises’ new flagship, currently under construction at the Aker Yards France in St Nazaire.

Available in five languages (Italian, English, French, German, Spanish), the site includes a clock counting down to the launch day. In the background, the image of the ship, whose godmother will be Sophia Loren, changes colors according to the time of connection.

The video recounts the story of the ship and its construction. The site features five special “assistants,” who accompany visitors through a virtual journey to discover the ship.

Each assistant reveals the secrets of MSC Fantasia — the captain talks about his ship, the chef recommends restaurants and specialties, the entertainment organizer talks about her work and the areas dedicated to children and kids; the butler leads visitors through the exclusive MSC Yacht Club, and the director of the MSC Aurea Spa opens the doors to the relaxation and well-being areas.

The site also has sections containing photo galleries with three-dimensional images and plans.

There is also a “Questions & Answers” space for those who wish to know more about MSC Fantasia. Finally, with “MSC Navigator,” you can visit the ship interactively, stay up-to-date on itineraries, access maps of the ports, get information and images on the areas visited, and even virtually experience the MSC Yacht Club.

MSC Fantasia and its twin MSC Splendida, which will be inaugurated in July, introduce a new concept of cruise ship. In addition to new technologies, the two ships will be the first to have an exclusive VIP area in the MSC Yacht Club, made up of 99 suites, reserved areas, bars, restaurants, a solarium, two hydro-massage baths, a pool, a VIP observation lounge, a concierge desk, a panoramic view of the ship’s bow and the presence of round-the-clock butler service.

Carnival to Host Community Service Day in New Orleans

Carnival Cruise Lines is organizing the “Bloggers Cruise Community Service Day” for participants in the second “John Heald Bloggers Cruise” taking place on Carnival Fantasy from New Orleans in February.

The event will take place in New Orleans on Feb. 6, the day before the departure of the second annual cruise — a five-day voyage to Cozumel and Progreso operating Feb. 7-12.

Partnering with the city’s Beacon of Hope Resource Center, the bloggers community service day participants will clear debris and plant trees, helping to spruce up a neighborhood in New Orleans that sustained significant damage from Hurricane Katrina.

Carnival is also partnering with Maison St. Charles Hotel & Suites to provide one- and two-night pre-cruise land stays at special rates for participants.

“I invite everyone to join me in helping the people of New Orleans, and we look forward to working with the Beacon of Hope Resource Center in helping to beautify this magnificent city,” Heald said.

“Once onboard, we’ll enjoy Carnival Fantasy’s ‘Evolutions of Fun’ upgrades, as well as special events and shows just for my blogging friends.

It’s going to be a brilliant cruise, and I can’t wait to see you there.” Heather Huth, director of volunteers for the Beacon of Hope Resource Center, said, “Our goal is to create an environment that encourages our residents to return home. Although we are proud of how far we’ve come, there is still a long way to go. We are always in need of volunteer service and truly appreciate Carnival’s role in New Orleans’ continued recovery efforts.”

Following the hands-on charity activity, participants will be the guests of honor at a cocktail reception hosted by Heald, which will serve as a kick-off event for the voyage.

During the cruise, Heald will host a number of exclusive events, including a welcome-aboard reception, trivia contests, question-and-answer sessions and a “Tea Time with John” session. Photo opportunities with Heald will be available as well. A variety of giveaways and logo items also will be provided to all bloggers cruise participants, and Heald will submit posts to his blog throughout the voyage.

Reservations are currently being accepted for the bloggers cruise, as well as the pre-cruise land stay at the Maison St. Charles Hotel & Suites. Participants must request fare code CPBL/FPBL when booking the cruise to be included in the 2009 bloggers cruise events.

Royal Caribbean Expands 2009-2010 San Diego Season

Royal Caribbean International has announced new Mexican Riviera itineraries departing San Diego for the 2009-2010 winter-through-spring season.

The Radiance of the Seas will extend its season from San Diego, offering a total of 24 Mexican Riviera sailings, ranging from four to 12 nights, as well as two West Coast cruises, a nine- and a 10-night itinerary.

Subsequently, the cruise line has cancelled the Radiance of the Sea’s previously planned South America cruises during the same time period.

The ship will increase the total number of San Diego sailings from September 2009 through May 2010 with 10 long cruises to the Mexican Riviera.

These nine- to 11-night roundtrip itineraries are in addition to the 12 short cruises of four and five nights, which were announced earlier this year.

There’s also a 12-night holiday cruise departing Dec. 21, 2009, and a 13th five-night cruise sailing on May 3, 2010.

Ports of call on the Mexican Riviera cruises include Acapulco, Cabo San Lucas, Ensenada, Huatulco, Ixtapa (Zihuatanejo), Manzanillo, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. Radiance’s call at Manzanillo on Thanksgiving Day 2009 will mark the cruise line’s first return to the port since 1999.

The two West Coast cruises include one that sails from San Diego to Vancouver on Jan. 22, 2010, for 10 nights, and in reverse on March 2, 2010, for nine nights. Each sailing includes ports of call at Catalina Island; San Francisco; Astoria, Ore.; Seattle; and Victoria, B.C.

Guests holding individual or group reservations on Radiance of the Seas’ previously scheduled South America cruises from Nov. 21, 2009, through March 7, 2010, will have the option to rebook on Radiance of the Seas’ South America cruises from Nov. 23, 2008, through Feb. 1, 2009, and from Feb. 28, 2009, through April 26, 2009, subject to availability and at the prevailing rate.

Rebooking guests will receive onboard credits of $200 per standard stateroom and $400 per suite.

Crystal Serenity to Undergo Makeover This Fall

Crystal Cruises’ Crystal Serenity will undergo a makeover this fall.

Among the renovations during the 10-day scheduled dry-dock will be the conversion of 12 deluxe staterooms into eight penthouse staterooms; a redesigned Crystal Cove with an open layout and a round bar; and a new color palette and new equipment in the Crystal Casino.

Each of the 403-square-foot penthouses will offer personal butler service, a large private verandah, a sizeable living area, a bar stocked with complimentary wine and choice of liquor, a Jacuzzi tub and separate shower, a walk-in closet, a flat-screen TV, a DVD and CD player, Riedel glassware and complimentary pressing.

Following the conversion, the ship will feature 72 Penthouses (category PH), as well as 32 Penthouse Suites (PS) and four Crystal Penthouses (CP). Four of the new Penthouses connect with category AA Deluxe Staterooms with Verandahs.

The upgraded Crystal Cove will offer expanded hours to give guests another option for late-night cocktails and live piano music. In varying hues of aqua blue offset by chocolate tones, the venue’s new design is inspired by elements of the ocean and the sky.

The Crystal Casino will feature new slot machines in addition to roulette, craps, baccarat, blackjack tables and the Ultimate Texas Hold ’em. The new design will include jewel tones in gold, purple and magenta. The centerpiece will be a crystal chandelier measuring more than seven feet in diameter.

The multimillion-dollar undertaking will begin Nov. 10 while the Crystal Serenity is docked in Setubal, Portugal.

Following the makeover, the ship’s Stardust Lounge will boast a newly expanded dance floor with more than 15 percent of additional space and will implement a revised policy that bans smoking in the area in the post-dinner hours.

On Nov. 21, the ship will depart Lisbon en route to Miami in time for the Panama Canal and Caribbean Holiday season.

Cunard Line Underwrites PBS Series on Royal Family

Cunard is sponsoring the new PBS series “Monarchy: The Royal Family at Work,” a six-episode special that provides an exclusive look inside the modern British monarchy.

In advance of the series’ U.S. debut on Nov. 12, its associate producer and writer, Robert Hardman, sailed on Queen Mary 2’s Oct. 16 trans-Atlantic voyage to participate in the company’s enrichment program, Cunard Insights. During the voyage, Hardman afforded Cunard guests an exclusive preview of the full series, hosting pre-film introductions and participating in Q&A sessions following each screening. Authorized by Queen Elizabeth II, filmmakers were granted exclusive access for a behind-the-scenes look at Buckingham Palace.

The series features interviews with members of the royal family and observes preparations for elaborate formal occasions including a rare look inside the royal kitchens, wine cellar and car fleet, and the jobs of footmen, ladies in waiting, the yeoman guard and the crown jeweler.

The series takes viewers along as Queen Elizabeth II visits the first permanent British settlement in the U.S., spends time with President Bush at the White House and visits the newly democratic republic of Estonia where no British monarch had set foot before. Carnival Liberty to Remain in Miami Year-Round

Carnival Cruise Lines said its Miami-based Carnival Liberty, which was originally scheduled to reposition to Europe in May, will instead remain in Miami to operate year-round Caribbean cruises.

The Carnival Liberty will continue to offer its existing schedule of seven-day Caribbean cruises through the spring and then introduce a new seven-day program from Miami beginning in April.

In turn, the Carnival Pride, currently based in Long Beach, Calif., and originally scheduled to shift to Miami for a five-month Caribbean deployment from April through August, will instead launch its Baltimore-based program on April 27. Prior to its Baltimore deployment, Carnival Pride will operate its previously scheduled Panama Canal cruise from Long Beach to Miami March 22-April 5, as well as a six-day cruise departing April 5 and two seven-day Caribbean cruises departing April 11 and April 18 from Miami.

Carnival will still offer several European cruises next year when the 3,646-passenger Carnival Dream — the line’s newest and largest ship — debuts with three 12-day Grand Mediterranean cruises from Rome (Civitavecchia) in September and October 2009. Carnival Dream will also operate a 16-day trans-Atlantic crossing from Rome (Civitavecchia) to New York in late October 2009.

Carnival Cruise Lines

Carnival Cruise Lines

Cahill said the company will offer assistance in finding vacation alternatives to Carnival Liberty guests who were scheduled to sail in Europe, including European cruises on Carnival’s sister companies that have a strong presence in the region such as Holland America Line and Princess Cruises.

“We understand that our guests who were scheduled to sail in Europe are going to be disappointed by this development and we sincerely apologize to them for this disruption to their vacation plans,” he said.

“Europe remains a desirable vacation choice for many and we will endeavor to help our guests find alternative plans to sail within the region

” Guests booked on the Carnival Liberty Europe cruises will be provided onboard credit offers toward other 2009 Carnival cruises, including the Carnival Dream European departures. In addition, Carnival will assist guests with the cost of changes/cancellations for non-refundable air transportation.

Guests who were booked on the Carnival Pride’s Caribbean cruises from April 25 to Aug. 29, 2009, from Miami will be automatically shifted to the same accommodations on the Carnival Liberty. The Carnival Liberty will also operate the same itineraries as previously scheduled on the Carnival Pride.

Carnival Liberty will continue its current program of seven-day Caribbean cruises from Miami through April 18, then assume a new schedule of weeklong cruises to the Western and Exotic Eastern Caribbean beginning April 25 through Nov. 28, 2009.

The new Exotic Eastern Caribbean cruise route will feature Half Moon Cay, St. Thomas, San Juan, and Grand Turk. The western route will visit Ocho Rios, Grand Cayman and Cozumel.

Carnival Pride will launch Baltimore’s first year-round cruise program beginning on April 27, four months ahead of the original schedule.

From April 27 to Sept. 6, the ship will operate six-, seven- and eight-day cruises. These cruises will visit a variety of ports including Nassau, Freeport, Half Moon Cay, Port Canaveral and Grand Turk. Carnival will begin accepting reservations for the new Carnival Liberty and Carnival Pride programs from Miami and Baltimore beginning Oct. 30.

Carnival Dream Makes Shipyard Debut in Italy

Carnival Cruise Lines’ Carnival Dream, the biggest passenger ship ever built by the Fincantieri shipyard and in Italy, was launched in Monfalcone on Oct. 24.

Carnival Cruise Lines

Carnival Cruise Lines

It will be the flagship of Carnival’s fleet. Delivery is scheduled for fall 2009. The launching was preceded by the traditional well-wishing coin ceremony, when a silver dollar is welded into the upper deck of the ship, following an ancient maritime tradition.

Patrizia Bottaro, a Fincantieri employee, was chosen as the ship’s godmother. The Dream will be 130,000 tons and accommodate up to 4,631 passengers, assisted by 1,369 crew members. The Carnival Dream is an evolution of the Conquest class and includes several modifications from the original layout.

Significant alterations have been made in the layout of public areas. For example, Deck 5 will feature a promenade around the entire perimeter of the ship. And more restaurants and public areas will overlook the sea. Carnival Dream will undergo outfitting operations in the next few months.

The ship will feature two new water parks on the open decks, one for adults and one for children with four water slides.

Even the President isn’t Safe – Cruising and Wireless don’t Mix

Cruise Zanza Blue

Cruise Zanza Blue

As the President of a successful travel company I know all to well the hardships many cruisers have when they get an outrageous wireless bill a month later. To make matters worse I worked on dozens of ships over a 12 year period. I am all too familiar with the cell phone horror stories from guests and crew.

For quite a while now I have been considering placing a travel alert on our website regarding using your cell phone/wireless card onboard. Now I have told our tech team it’s a priority.

Since I am aware of the high charges I always take steps to turn off my phone and physically pull my wireless card out of the computer when at sea. I have recently had a problem on two occasions with a small amount under $100 being charged and AT&T was always gracious enough to remove it.

I cruised on the RCI EN last month and I just checked my phone bill today; after I got back up from the floor I quickly called AT&T. As of this moment I no idea what will happen as an inquiry was submitted.

I have posted my bill on our site as proof of the amount; here is the link for your viewing pleasure.  http://www.zanza.com/Phone-Bill.htm

This charge did not originate from my cell phone but on my laptops wireless card within a 24 hour period.  I am surprised as I am very careful not to run the software when onboard (only in US ports).

If you are taking a cruise don’t chat on your cell phone while onboard. If your traveling with children make sure they don’t have their cell phone while they wander the decks, even texting adds up really fast.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line Announces Ends Fuel Supplement – Cruise News

Royal Caribbean Newset Ship Oasis of the Seas

Royal Caribbean Newset Ship Oasis of the Seas

Caribbean Cruises Ltd. will no longer apply fuel supplements to new bookings on Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Cruises made on or after Nov. 10 for sailings that depart on or after Jan. 1, 2010. The company said the decision takes into consideration the recent reductions in global fuel prices.

The company also has established specific guidelines that will determine whether fuel supplement refunds will be provided for sailings that begin in 2009 and later, which were booked prior to Nov. 10, if fuel prices remain below a specific price threshold. For 2009 sailings and 2010 sailings booked before Nov. 10, the company will determine on a quarterly basis whether fuel supplements will be refunded. Refunds, in the form of an onboard credit, will be provided if the closing price of West Texas Intermediate fuel is $65 or less, at the closing time of the New York Mercantile Exchange, two weeks prior to the beginning of the upcoming calendar quarter. When those conditions are met, an onboard credit will be provided to all guests on sailings that begin during the upcoming calendar quarter.

The company will continue to closely monitor global fuel prices and said it could reinstate a fuel supplement if there is an upturn in those cost of fuel.

Carnival Cruise Line to Break Six-Story Piñata Over Philadelphia

Carnival Cruise Lines

Carnival Cruise Lines

New to Carnival? Looking for Carnivals new look? You can check out the latest Carnival Video’s at www.zanza.com/CL-Carnival-Cruise-Line.aspx

Carnival Cruise Lines will attempt to break a Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Piñata in Philadelphia’s Center City on Nov. 2.

During a “Fun Crowd” event at North 20th and Market streets, the six-story-tall piñata — filled with 8,000 pounds of candy — will be unveiled, along with free ice cream, live music, cruise giveaways and a booth of activities that can be shared online with friends.

To break the world record, the piñata will be 62 feet tall and 55 feet from nose to tail.

A Guinness World Record adjudicator will inspect the piñata to confirm whether it breaks the previous record of 48 feet by 53 feet, currently held by Microsoft.

The piñata will then be suspended from a crane while a wrecking ball destroys it and drops 8,000 pounds of candy onto the ground for the crowd below.

Those attending the event will have the opportunity to be in Carnival’s new TV commercial being shot on-site, and have the chance to win one of five free Caribbean cruises.

The “Fun Booth” allows people to create an e-postcard or karaoke video to send to friends as proof that they were present for the record-breaking moment.

Visitors can also listen to a live band and enjoy free ice cream, candy and other giveaways. Philadelphia was chosen for this event because Carnival launches the first year-round cruise program from the Port of Baltimore beginning in fall 2009.

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis to Feature New Youth Zone

Royal Caribbean Newset Ship Oasis of the Seas

UPDATE – NEW VIDEO OF THE ROYAL CARIBBEAN OASIS OF THE SEAS RELEASED – SEE THE SHIP FIRST HAND – Video available at www.zanza.com/podcast.aspx
Royal Caribbean International last night announced the final neighborhood on the Oasis of the Seas –

The Youth Zone, a haven for children and teens including themed play areas, a teen club and a nursery.

The company announced the seventh and final of the ship’s neighborhoods during an online reveal sponsored by American Express Travel.

Due to launch in November 2009, the 220,000-ton Oasis of the Seas will feature six other neighborhoods, including Central Park, Boardwalk with the AquaTheater, the Royal Promenade, the Pool and Sports Zone, the Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center, and Entertainment Place.

“The Youth Zone aboard Oasis of the Seas will continue to build on our award-winning Adventure Ocean youth and teen programs, and expand to include dedicated space and programming for our guests as young as six months,” said Adam Goldstein, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International.

The latest neighborhood unveiling introduced kid- and teen-friendly adventures within the 28,700-square-foot Youth Zone. Among the features are Kids Avenue, a central boulevard connecting dedicated Adventure Ocean spaces and various themed play areas; the cruise line’s first nursery for infants and toddlers six months or older; and state-of-the-art teen areas. A video preview of these areas, including interviews with Royal Caribbean executives, is now available at www.OasisoftheSeas.com.

“As a huge proponent of family travel, we are especially thrilled to sponsor the unveiling of the Youth Zone,” said Lynne Biggar, senior vice president and general manager of American Express Travel.

“In recent years, we’ve seen family travel increase and evolve, particularly in the area of multi-generational travel. This has prompted us to provide dedicated family travel specialists, as well as offer family vacation options that come with great value and memorable experiences for all.”

The Royal Babies and Tots nursery, a first for Royal Caribbean, will serve as a fully-staffed nursery with trained professionals, as well as various playgroups created by Fisher-Price and Crayola. Open daily, the nursery will offer parents drop-off options in the daytime and evening, carefully maintaining an optimum staff-to-child ratio. Free-time play also will be offered daily.

Within the Youth Zone, Kids Avenue will serve as the main promenade for young cruisers. Arts and crafts activities, scavenger hunts, talent shows and other scheduled and guided age-specific activities will be offered to three age groups, each with its own space: Aquanauts, age 3 to 5; Explorers, age 6 to 8; and Voyagers, ages 9 to 11.

In addition, there will be new common play areas, including the Kid’s Arcade for video games; the Workshop, where families can learn scrapbooking skills or create personalized jewelry; Imagination Studio where children can explore through the Adventure Art by Crayola; an Adventure Science Lab; Play, a circular area for sports and games; and Adventure Ocean Theater, a children’s theater at sea complete with a stage and curtains, audience seating and production equipment.

The teen-only spaces will be located one deck above and adjacent to the ship’s Sports Deck, where kids can try out the ship’s two FlowRider surf simulators; the miniature golf-course, Oasis Dunes; or the Sports Court for volleyball and basketball games.

The physical separation of the teen-only spaces from younger Adventure Ocean guests is an enhancement recommended by Royal Caribbean’s Teen Advisory Board. Longtime teen-only spaces, Fuel disco and The Living Room, will return aboard Oasis of the Seas, only larger and more state-of-the-art.

The Living Room is a hangout for teens with a “mock-tail” bar, which serves non-alcoholic sodas and juice concoctions. It also is the place for Scratch DJ 101 classes and surfing the Internet via the bank of computer stations. An outdoor deck is adjacent.

In addition to these areas, attractions for children will be located throughout the ship’s other neighborhoods.

Along the Boardwalk, kids and teens will be able to shop at retail stores tailored to their interests, and infants and toddlers can ride the Carousel with their parents or enjoy the play space modeled after a 50’s style gas station next to the Johnny Rockets restaurant.

The Challengers Arcade will return with the latest video games. In the Vitality Spa and Fitness Zone, teens and tweens can enjoy a menu of spa options specially tailored for them. Oasis of the Seas will be the largest cruise ship in the world, spanning 16 decks with capacity for 5,400 guests at double occupancy. Its inaugural voyage is scheduled to depart Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades on Dec. 12, 2009, for a season of Eastern Caribbean cruises.

Cunard’s QE2 Bids Final Farewell to America

Cunard’s QE2 bid a final farewell to America on Friday in a celebration for the company’s longest serving liner.
On its 710th and final call to New York, the vessel sailed through New York Harbor for the last time, escorted by the U.S. Coast Guard and FDNY fireboats, meeting sister ship Queen Mary 2 for their final rendezvous at the Statue of Liberty before departing in tandem for Southampton, England.
“It is most fitting that QE2’s farewell to America be celebrated in New York, the city Cunard has called our North America homeport since 1847 and the setting for so much of the line’s history,” said Carol Marlow, president of Cunard Line. Earlier in the day, Consul General-New York Sir Alan Collins and British Ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald joined Marlow and guests onboard QE2 for a reception and farewell luncheon to celebrate the storied life of the legendary ocean liner.
Members of the FDNY Emerald Society Pipes and Drums provided a salute to QE2 and joined crowds of well-wishers lining the Battery Park Promenade to bid farewell.

Ruby Princess to Debut Special New Features- Princess Cruises

Princess Cruise Lines

Princess Cruise Lines

When Princess Cruises’ Ruby Princess launches on Nov. 8, the ship will introduce a host of new shipboard services and special features.

Among the new options is a pub lunch, an exclusive breakfast for suite passengers, enrichment programs from astronomy to mixology, two new stage shows, and expanded wireless Internet and cell phone connectivity.

The 3,070-passenger vessel will also feature the favorites aboard sister ships Crown Princess and Emerald Princess.

Among the new features being introduced on Ruby Princess is a pub lunch in the Wheelhouse Bar. On sea days, the Wheelhouse Bar will serve traditional British pub fare, including bangers and mash, fish and chips, ploughman’s lunch and cottage pie. Traditional pub brews such as Stella Artois, Bass Ale or Guinness will be served. The pub lunch meal service is free and will run from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Suite passengers will have the opportunity to enjoy an exclusive breakfast in Sabatini’s, the line’s trademark Italian eatery. Beginning with a “Good Morning Mimosa,” the menu features a variety of breakfast favorites, plus specialty items such as brioche French toast with apple-and-cinnamon compote, yogurt and super granola parfait with raspberry swirl, soft-poached egg over potato and vegetables with hollandaise sauce, and freshly made Belgian waffles. Suite passengers can enjoy this from approximately 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Vines, the wine bar in the atrium, will now feature a selection of domestic and imported artisan cheeses, in addition to more than 30 wines by the glass and seafood appetizers. Twelve varieties — including unique choices such as boschetto al tartufo bianchetto, reblochon and cambozola — will be featured each day for a nominal fee.

Vines will also host a series of events where passengers can meet members of the ship’s staff, and will continue to offer wine flights and parings.

A number of new ScholarShip@Sea enrichment programs will debut aboard Ruby Princess, including party-planning tips from lifestyle expert Susie Coelho via a multimedia presentation hosted by the cruise director.

Navigation@Sea focuses on the history of navigation as well as the complexities of plotting the route of a modern cruise ship, with a presentation by the ship’s navigator.

Mixology@Sea is a hands-on course taught by the ship’s bar manager.

For star gazers, the new Astronomy@Sea program allows passengers to explore the night sky through a telescope on the top deck, with the guidance of a ship’s bridge officer.

Ruby Princess will present two new Princess-produced shows in the ship’s theater. “Broadway Ballroom” presents the music of the Great White Way with a ballroom flair, pairing the songs of hit musicals with dance numbers ranging from foxtrot to rumba.

The show also features the talents of a costume designer and choreographer from the TV hit “Dancing with the Stars.” Meanwhile, “Once Upon a Dream” uses multidimensional cinematic projection to follow a dreamscape. The audience will accompany a young woman’s journey as she dreams of everything from a tea party in an English garden to singing camels in the desert, and even a trip through a waterfall and brief nightmare before waking to a new day.

A variety of new audience-participation events will also debut on the ship. Karaoke fans can go a bit farther with “Love Boat Legends,” where they are actually transformed into a famous artist of the past.

“So You Wanna Be A Rock Star?” moves beyond pre-recorded karaoke tunes to give audience members the opportunity to rock with a live band on stage.

“Oceans of Talent” puts passenger talent center stage, whether they play a musical instrument or try out their comedic timing.

“The Wake Up Show” takes Princess’ morning show with the cruise director to a new level with an irreverent talk show format, live band, special guests and an opportunity for passengers to join the studio audience, as the show is taped in the evening before its broadcast the next morning.

A number of new service touches will be introduced. In the Horizon Court buffet, new waffle stations will offer cooked-to-order waffles at breakfast and throughout lunchtime, and the buffet will also begin serving complimentary lemonade as a beverage choice.

In the evening, passengers will find a selection of canapés in several of the ship’s public lounges.

Passengers arriving back from shore will be greeted with chilled face cloths, and, by the pool, misting stewards will offer a quick spritz with Evian.

Young passengers can enjoy a new Wizards Academy, an exclusive presentation from the California Science Center. This program lets children explore the connection between science and magic in a fun and participative environment. Kids will also enjoy activities and projects from arts and crafts company Klutz, or participate in Yoga for Kids, a course designed specifically for children.

Expanding on Princess’ Internet and phone connectivity, Ruby Princess will offer laptop users additional wireless hotspots around the vessel, including staterooms. The ship will also be equipped so that passengers can use their personal cellular phones, if they have international roaming plans, while onboard.

A new opportunity to experience an array of back-of-house areas, the Ultimate Ship Tour takes passengers beyond the public areas with visits to the engine control room, medical center, print shop, laundry, photo lab, funnel, bridge and other spaces. Participants will receive themed mementos at many of the stops along the route.

The Ruby Princess will feature an inaugural season of Western Caribbean cruises roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale, followed by a program of Mediterranean voyages in summer 2009.

Crystal Luxury Cruise Line Offers Green Hangers in Guestroom Closets

Cruise Crystal Luxury

Cruise Crystal Luxury

Crystal Cruises has partnered with Hanger Network, the creator of EcoHangers, to install environmentally friendly hangers in the guest staterooms of its ships.

EcoHangers are an alternative to the 3.5 billion wire hangers and the 5 billion plastic hangers that fill America’s landfills each year.

EcoHangers are 100 percent recyclable, manufactured in EPA-regulated factories in the U.S. from 100 percent recycled materials, and have proven to be stronger than wire hangers in laboratory strength tests.

Under this new partnership, the Crystal Cruises fleet will use company-branded EcoHangers for its guest laundering services. The partnership with Hanger Network reaffirms Crystal Cruises’ commitment to the environment.

“Crystal Clean” is the company’s program of environmentally-friendly initiatives, which includes educating its staff on an ongoing basis about conservation methods onboard, ashore and in their homes. In addition, the “Crystal Clean” message is reiterated to guests through its onboard publication and signage posted in every stateroom and suite.

“Crystal Cruises recognizes we are stewards of our oceans and we continually seek ways to minimize our impact on the environment,” said Gregg Michel, Crystal Cruises’ president.

“Along with the introduction of the EcoHanger, we are distributing laundry in washable garment bags, instead of plastic, both of which are aesthetic enhancements as well as being more ecologically beneficial.”

Carnival Sensation to Add 98 Balconies – Carnival Cruise News

Carnival Cruise Lines

Carnival Cruise Lines

Carnival Cruise Lines will add balconies to 98 existing staterooms aboard the 2,052-passenger Carnival Sensation during a 35-day dry-dock taking place in January.

Ocean-view staterooms will be retrofitted with new balconies that will extend from the ship. The stateroom and balcony will measure a total of about 230 square feet. Twenty-four of the new balcony staterooms will be located mid-ship on both the port and starboard sides and 12 will be located near the stern. The other 62 will be located within the aft section of the ship, with several of these cabins featuring extended balconies. Additionally, a number of the suites will be modified to feature larger, extended balconies.

The stateroom modifications are one aspect of the ship’s extensive multi-million-dollar renovation, all part of the line’s Evolutions of Fun product enhancement initiative.

Carnival Sensation’s makeover will also include a previously announced WaterWorks aqua park, Serenity adults-only area, and a redesigned tropical-themed main pool area.

Additionally, all staterooms will be completely refurbished, as will virtually all dining, dancing and entertainment venues.

Guest corridors will be renovated and a new Circle C facility catering to 12- to 14-year olds will be added.

Carnival Sensation currently operates year-round three- and four-day Bahamas cruises from Port Canaveral. Three-day cruises depart Thursdays and call at Nassau, while four-day voyages depart Sundays and visit Nassau and Freeport. Carnival Sensation’s new and extended balcony staterooms will be open for reservations Oct. 24.

Star Princess Gets New Piazza, Adult Retreat – Princess Cruise Line

 Princess Cruise Lines

Princess Cruises’ Star Princess emerged last weekend from a three-week dry-dock that transformed the atrium into a street café-like piazza, added the adults-only retreat called The Sanctuary, and installed a 300-square-foot poolside movie screen.

These features, which have been introduced on Princess’ newest vessels, are expanding to other ships in the fleet, and Star Princess is the first to get these elements.

Star Princess’ piazza-style atrium now features dining and entertainment opportunities including specialty coffees, baked goods, paninis, salads and tapas in the International Café.

It will also introduce an expanded Vines wine bar concept, which will feature more than 30 wines by the glass, artisan meats and cheeses, plus a wine shop.

On the top deck, passengers can relax in The Sanctuary, an adults-only retreat featuring plush padded lounge chairs and the services of dedicated Serenity Stewards. Along with beverages and light snacks, visitors to this exclusive space can also receive a massage in one of two private cabanas.

Princess’ Movies Under the Stars poolside screen is now in place and will show a variety of films, concerts and special events daily. In the evenings it becomes an outdoor theater with covered lounge chairs and blankets, along with free popcorn, plus other snacks and beverages.

Additional changes made during the dry-dock include a new Internet Café and library area, enhancements to the onboard boutiques, the addition of LCD flat-screen TVs in all staterooms, and other cosmetic updates.

Star Princess is the first of three ships to receive these updates. Caribbean Princess and Golden Princess will also receive similar transformations in January and April 2009, respectively. Caribbean Princess and Golden Princess will also receive a new Crown Grill steak and seafood restaurant, a new casino area and six additional suites.

Holland America’s Veendam to Sail South America in 2009-10

Holland America Line’s Veendam is set to cruise South America for the fall 2009 and the winter and spring 2010 season.

By the time Veendam embarks on its South America sailings it will have undergone extensive renovations that include a new resort pool, lanai staterooms, new entertainment and enrichment options, new stateroom décor and more. The newly refurbished vessel will join Prinsendam, which is also sailing South America and Antarctica in 2010.

The 10 sailings aboard the Veendam range from 16 to 20 days. It will spend more time in ports than most major cruise lines and is the only premium cruise line offering overnights in Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires on select cruises.

“We have seen an increase in travelers who wish to take a South America cruise aboard a premium, mid-sized ship,” said Richard Meadows, executive vice president for marketing, sales and guest programs.

Holland America Line

“With the newly renovated Veendam sailing South America in 2009 and 2010, and the Prinsendam, our 793-guest ‘Elegant Explorer,’ we are perfectly poised to meet travelers’ discriminating demands as well as provide a premium, enriching and unforgettable experience to this remarkable continent.”

Holland America offers several pre- and post-cruise land tours. Guests can opt to spend an extra night or two in Rio de Janeiro and Santiago de Chile. Guests also can take overland tours ranging from two to five days to the ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru, Iguaçu Falls on the border of Brazil and Argentina, and Chile’s wine country.

Veendam’s first South America sailing departs San Diego on Oct. 31, 2009, on a 19-day journey to Valparaiso, Chile, that visits ports in Mexico and Central America before making its way to Manta, Ecuador; Salaverry, Peru; and an overnight in Callao (Lima), Peru.

While in Salaverry, guests may board a flight to take advantage of the optional, two-night shore excursion to Machu Picchu. Departing Valparaiso Nov. 19, 2009, and March 7, 2010, Veendam will sail a 16-day South America Explorer cruise that calls at Ushuaia, Argentina; Montevideo, Uruguay; Punta Arenas, Chile; and Puerto Montt, Chile. With an overnight in Buenos Aires, guests can take in a tango show or visit Iguaçu Falls. Veendam sails the reverse itinerary from Rio de Janeiro to Valparaiso on Dec. 5, 2009, as well as Feb. 19 and March 23, 2010.

The Veendam will depart Dec. 21, 2009, on a holiday cruise and again, Jan. 10 and Jan. 30, 2010, on a 20-day Antarctica voyage.

The Dec. 21 and Jan. 30 voyages begin in Valparaiso and end in Rio de Janeiro. The Jan. 10 cruise sails the reverse itinerary. These cruises offer calls in Puerto Montt and Punta Arenas, Chile, as well as Ushuaia, Argentina. Following the rounding of Cape Horn, the ship continues to Antarctica and spends three days exploring the continent. Veendam also calls in Stanley, Falkland Islands; Buenos Aires; and Montevideo, Uruguay.

On April 8, 2010, Veendam ends its seasonal cruises in South America, departing Valparaiso for a 17-day journey that sails the western coast of South America and transits the Panama Canal. Overnight calls are planned in Callao, Peru, and Fuerte Amador, Panama, and an optional tour to Machu Picchu is also offered. During this cruise, the Veendam calls at six ports throughout Chile, Peru, and Ecuador before transiting the Panama Canal. After calling at Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, Veendam ends its cruise in Fort Lauderdale, where guests can opt to spend an extra night or two in post-cruise land tours.

Carnival Corp. Brands Eliminate Fuel Supplements

Six brands of Carnival Corp. will eliminate their existing fuel supplements for all new bookings on 2010 departures, effective Oct. 31. At that same time, a price increase on 2010 sailings will become effective.

Additionally, the company has established specific guidelines under which the current fuel supplement may be reimbursed to consumers for 2008 and 2009 voyages.

The six brands are Carnival Cruise Lines, Costa Cruises, Cunard Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises and The Yachts of Seabourn.

Carnival Cruise Lines

Carnival Cruise Lines

For 2008 and 2009 departures, if the price of light sweet crude oil according to the New York Mercantile Exchange Index is $70 per barrel or less at the 2:30 p.m. close of business as reported by Reuters on each of the 25 consecutive trading days ending five trading days prior to the guest’s cruise departure date, the fuel supplement will be refunded in the form of a shipboard credit.

Guests who book a 2010 cruise prior to Oct. 31, 2008, will be charged the current fuel supplement but will also be eligible for a refund in accordance with the same fuel price conditions being implemented for 2008 and 2009 departures.

Bill Harber, director of marketing for Carnival Corp., said the company was implementing these initiatives due to the recent trends in declining fuel prices in an effort to migrate away from charging a separate fuel supplement.

“If fuel prices stabilize below $70 a barrel, we will be able to effectively eliminate a separate fuel supplement,” he said. However, he cautioned that there is still a risk that fuel prices could move higher, “which would require us to maintain or reinstate a fuel supplement but the company is hopeful that the goal of eliminating the fuel supplement can be achieved.” Harber added that “these industry-leading initiatives demonstrate our commitment to our guests and travel agents to make our brands the most attractive cruise vacations available.”

The fuel supplement for five of the six Carnival Corp. brands is currently $9 per person, per day, for the first and second guest (not to exceed $126 per person per voyage) and $4 per person, per day for third, fourth and fifth guests (not to exceed $56 per person per voyage).

Seabourn’s fuel supplement is $15 per person, per day, for the first and second guest (not to exceed $210 per person per voyage) and $4 per person, per day, for third and fourth guests (not to exceed $56 per person per voyage).

Holland America Cruise Line’s Pinnacle Grill Debuts New Menu

Holland America Line is introducing a new menu on its Pinnacle Grill, the reservations-only dining venue on all its ships.

Holland America Line

Holland America Line

Created by Master Chef Rudi Sodamin and introduced on the Eurodam earlier this summer, the expanded menu introduces new Pacific Northwest specialty entrees and adds creations ranging from lobster macaroni and cheese to Colorado lamb chops.

Seafood dishes include broiled, troll-caught salmon, broiled or poached lobster tail, cedar-planked black cod with shrimp scampi and Sodamin’s interpretation of surf-and-turf: filet mignon and jumbo prawns on whipped potatoes with garlic rosemary beurre blanc. Cuts of prime hand-selected beef continue to highlight the Pinnacle’s menu.

Guests can select from five prime cuts of steak rubbed with special Holland America Culinary Collection seasoning, grilled and served with hand-crafted sauces such as Master Chef’s green peppercorn classic hollandaise. They can also opt for Filet Steak Diane, a grilled veal chop marinated overnight in a blend of rosemary, garlic and pepper vinegar with scallions, or oven-baked chicken breast stuffed with spinach and garlic herb cheese.

“Master Chef Sodamin has designed this new menu to offer our guests a wider range of dishes and flavors,” said Richard Meadows, executive vice president of marketing, sales and guest programs.

“The restaurant is such a popular spot that we want to keep it fresh with much variety and allow guests to dine several nights a cruise as many like to do.

The menu continues to highlight Holland America’s Pacific Northwest roots while adding innovative accents to heighten the Pinnacle Grill dining experience.”

Appetizers include the Pinnacle Ocean Platter — carpaccio of lightly smoked salmon, hot smoked salmon, sea scallops and wasabi cream — and Dungeness crab cakes with spiral shaved cucumber and sweet chili-mustard sauce.

Also offered are French onion soup King Louis XV, lobster bisque, jumbo shrimp cocktail, vine-ripened beefsteak tomato salad, baby arugula salad and Caesar salad prepared tableside.

Desserts featuring Pacific Northwest ingredients include warm Grand Marnier chocolate volcano cake, chocolate or vanilla velvet soufflé, creamy homemade raspberry cheesecake and Not-So-Classic Baked Alaska.

Chocolate and raisin bread pudding, crème brulee, fresh seasonal fruits and berries and a variety of ice creams, sorbets and international cheeses complete the dessert menu.

The Pinnacle Grill wine list features an extensive selection of premium Pacific Northwest wines, French champagnes, port and dessert wines. It also offers wine flights, which let guests sample four wines during their meal. A Harvest White Sangria featuring Northwest apples, cherries, peaches and lemons in Sauvignon Blanc wine is another new addition.

The Pinnacle Grill is an alternative-dining venue on all Holland America Line ships. Featuring Bulgari china, Frette linens and Riedel stemware, the Pinnacle Grill requires reservations and a surcharge of $20 per person for dinner and $15 for lunch

Cunard’s QE2 to Bid Farewell to America

Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth 2 will bid farewell to America on Oct. 16 during a celebratory call to New York City.

The historic occasion will mark the ship’s 706th and final call to New York. Escorted by FDNY fireboats and flotilla of pleasure craft, the QE2 will depart the Westside Terminal at 5 p.m. to meet its sister ship, Queen Mary 2, for a rendezvous at the Statue of Liberty.

Both liners are embarking on a tandem voyage to Southampton, England, marking QE2’s 806th and final trans-Atlantic crossing.

QE2 was named by Queen Elizabeth II in 1967. During nearly four decades at sea, the liner has logged 5.9 million nautical miles (equivalent to traveling to the moon and back 13 times), carried more than 2.5 million passengers and has sailed 25 World Cruises.

With a top speed of 32.5 knots, QE2 is the fastest passenger ship in the world. In 1982, it was requisitioned by the British government for military service in the Falkland Islands and joined the ranks of such Cunarders as Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth that were also called upon to serve in times of conflict.

“It is most fitting that QE2’s farewell to America be celebrated in New York, the city Cunard has called our North America homeport since 1847,” said Carol Marlow, president of Cunard Line.

“She will always be remembered as the best-loved ship in the world and we are delighted that she will be cherished by future generations of travelers at her new home in Dubai.

Her mantle as flagship of the British merchant fleet has proudly been bestowed upon Queen Mary 2, a ship recognized as the grandest ocean liner ever built and surely destined to continue Cunard’s legacy.”

During QE2’s arrival in the early morning of Oct. 16, QE2 will fly a traditional Paying-Off Pennant, a maritime flag signifying the ship’s length of service to the fleet.

The pennant will be presented as a commemorative gift to a local dignitary during a reception onboard the ship.

Thousands of well-wishers are expected to gather at New York harbor viewing locations including Battery Park, Robert F. Wagner Jr. Park, The Esplanade along the length of Battery Park City and Hudson River Park.

A pipe and drum corps will perform in Battery Park as a salute and final farewell to QE2.

QE2 completes service to Cunard in November after sailing a final voyage to Dubai where it will be refurbished and become a luxury hotel, entertainment destination and maritime museum.

Carnival to Add Balcony Staterooms to Three Ships

Carnival Cruise Lines will add balconies to a number of cabins on three ships during upcoming dry-docks over the next few months.

Staterooms on the Carnival Destiny, Carnival Triumph and Carnival Liberty that currently feature floor-to-ceiling windows will be retrofitted with private balconies, creating 48 additional 230-square-foot verandah staterooms on these vessels. Additionally, two new 750-square-foot Deluxe Penthouse Suites — nearly double the size of the largest staterooms in the fleet — will be added to the Carnival Liberty.

Carnival Cruise Lines

Carnival Cruise Lines

“Balcony staterooms continue to be in great demand — in fact, they’re often the first cabin category to sell out,” said Ruben Rodriguez, Carnival’s executive vice president of marketing and guest experience.

Like all “Fun Ship” accommodations, the new balcony staterooms will offer in-cabin amenities such as the Carnival Comfort Bed sleep system with plush mattresses, luxurious duvets and high-quality linens and pillows. Carnival balcony accommodations also include terrycloth robes for use during the cruise, satellite television, mini bars, hair dryers and amenity kits with a wide array of brand-name products.

The two 750-square-foot Deluxe Penthouse Suites on the Carnival Liberty will feature a new cabin configuration with a separate bedroom, living area and two full bathrooms, including one with a bathtub.

Located on the forward section on Deck 9, the Deluxe Penthouse Suites can accommodate up to five guests on two twin beds that convert to a king, a sofa bed and two pull-down upper beds. The new balcony staterooms on these three vessels are now available for sale.

Princess Enhances Onboard Experience in Hawaii

Princess Cruises is offering an enhanced Hawaiian cultural experience onboard Golden Princess as it begins a new season in the Hawaiian Islands.

Among the onboard features will be demonstrations by local artisans, ukulele lessons and regional cuisine in the dining room.

“Our goal is to captivate our passengers with onboard experiences that capture the heart and soul of Hawaii,” said Jan Swartz, Princess’ senior vice president. “We want to make sure that our guests go home with a deeper understanding of the islands and the people who live there.”

Princess Cruise Lines

Princess Cruise Lines

This year, Princess’ Hawaiian programs will feature cultural presentations and demonstrations, interpretive lectures, folkloric performances, hands-on activities, Hawaiian cuisine, and a number of new Adventures Ashore excursion options throughout the islands.

Local artisans and performers will come aboard during select island port calls. Among them will be Ni‘ihau shell artists from Kauai. The “forbidden” island of Ni‘ihau is privately owned and largely closed to the rest of the world. Although outsiders generally cannot visit there, some of Ni‘ihau’s skilled artisans will come onboard for a shell lei-making demonstration.

Following an ancient art form, the native Hawaiian lei-makers use tiny shells, found only on the northern coast of Ni‘ihau, to create pieces that are prized as fine jewelry.

In Hilo, native bone carver Dean Kaahanui will come aboard to present a workshop on the history of his craft and demonstrate the art of bone carving. During the workshop, he’ll also explain the inspiration for his work, which is often based on Hawaiian legends.

In Honolulu, children from Halau Hula Olana, a hula school, will perform on the ship. In addition, naturalists and lecturers from organizations such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Park Service will provide insight on marine biology, whale migration, volcanoes, the islands’ unusual endemic species, Hawaiian culture and history, and local myths and legends.

Regional Hawaiian cuisine — such as pineapples and mangos, unique fish and seafood, roast pig, and treats like coconut and macadamia nuts — will be featured onboard. Princess chefs will serve up such dishes as Macadamia and Panko Crusted Mahimahi, Lehua Honey BBQ Pork Spareribs, and Luau Pork with Apricot Drippings. A Hawaiian Island Night celebration will feature a full buffet with local taste treats, including pupus, a fresh fruit carving station and tropical-themed desserts.

For the 2008-09 season, Golden Princess sails to Hawaii on 14 departures. The ship offers 14-day round-trips from Los Angeles to Hilo, Honolulu, Kauai (Nawiliwili), and Maui. The ship sails until April 1.
