There’s been a buzz about cruises and cruise ships during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver Canada. In recent years cruise lines have relocated cruise ships as floating hotels during many major international events and the 2010 Olympics is as big as international events get.
Recently a few official news articles have been published indicating the Canadian government’s interest in using cruise ships to house the nearly 5000 police officers and security staff who need accommodations during the Winter Olympics.
A few articles have indicated these mega liners may also be used for media and news outlets, this information was provided by VANOC who is responsible for the planning, organizing, financing and staging of the XXI Olympic Winter Games and the X Paralympic Winter Games in 2010.
There is no question regarding “If” cruise ships will be docked as floating hotels in Vancouver during the Winter Olympics. Royal Caribbean Radiance of the Seas and Royal Caribbean Jewel of the Seas will both be coming to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Royal Caribbean already posted the Pacific Coastal cruises which one could assume would be used as a floating hotel during the Olympics.
It would not be a surprise to see a variety of cruise lines getting in on the action. We surely will not see the Oasis of the Seas docked in Vancouver but it would be nice to see the Celebrity Solstice or even the Celebrity Equinox furnishing accommodations during the 2010 Winter Olympics providing Celebrity has a ship docked. Lets not forget about Princess or even Carnival, of course we would all want to see the Ruby Princess over the Carnival Spirit or Pride being a host cruise ship of the Winter Olympics.
The big question is who will use these ships during the Olympics. The best decision for the cruise lines is to offer these ships to their clients as floating hotels allowing onboard revenue that otherwise would be absent if police were using the accommodations. Alternatively the Canadian Government and the port has to sign off on who will dock during the Olympics.
Even if the ships were used exclusively for the Canadian Government the cruise lines would still get some great free brand advertising considering the media coverage of Vancouver during the Winter Olympics. Considering recent public information the deal may already be done, but when will they release the official press release?
Our other big question; what is the price tag going to be for such lush accommodations considering the hotels are charging considerable premiums. If these sailing are offered by the cruise lines you can bet bookings will close out in days
This will be an interesting subject to keep an eye on, we’ll keep you updated regarding the “Olympic Cruise Ship Bookings and Availability” if the cruise lines offer these ships as floating hotels we will update the blog.
